Puppy Chow

Images

Description

The first time I heard of puppy chow was over a decade ago while working with a chef who was making large batches of it for the holidays. I didn’t pay much attention to what she was doing and was confused as to why she wanted to give parcels of dog food away, but whatever. I had seen many nonsensical things in my life so I didn’t question it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 cups rice Chex cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

Directions

  1. Gather the ingredients.
  2. In a microwave-safe mixing bowl combine the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter.
  3. Heat the chocolate mixture in the microwave on full power in 30-second increments, stirring in between, until completely melted, about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes total time. Cook it until the chocolate is just melted, do not overcook or the chocolate may burn.
  4. Whisk in the salt and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Place the rice cereal in a large mixing bowl and pour the chocolate mixture on top. Toss together until all the cereal is completely coated. Set aside in the fridge for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
  6. Place the powdered sugar in a large zip top bag. Add the coated cereal to the zip top bag, seal it and then shake it to coat evenly.
  7. Line a sheet pan with a piece of parchment or wax paper. Empty the cereal onto the sheet and use your fingers to spread and separate the pieces. Place it in the fridge to set, about 20 minutes.
